Sorrento
The origins of Sorrento mingle between history and legend. According to tradition, it seems that the name "Sorrentum " is derived from the myth of the mermaids whose singing lured the sailors and made them lose their way. According to legend, however, Ulysses and his companions escaped by plugging their ears with wax. The mermaids, so humbled, were turned into rocks, called today "Li Galli", which are sited in the Bay of Salerno, at the beginning of the Amalfi drive. Founded by the Phoenicians, Sorrento was first a Greek and then a Roman Colony.

Naples
There has never been a lack of words to describe Naples. Unlike many European cities, it provokes reaction in the most laconic of visitors. What's more, any random selection of quotes about the city and its inhabitants is likely to include admiration and detraction in equal measure. The writer Peter Nichols sums up this polarised response: "Neapolitans still reproduce what must be the nearest equivalent to life in classical times. Naples is one of the great tests. Some people love it and some people hate it."

Salerno & Paestum
Capital of Campania's southernmost province, Salerno has much of the scruffy disorganized charm of Naples. Its grim industrial suburbs come as a particular shock after the beauty of the coastline. In its favour, Salerno claims to be a living, working city rather than a museum piece. Its claim to fame is as the capital of the Norman empire in the 11th century. It also claims the oldest medical school of Europe, supposedly founded by an Arab, a Jew, a Christian and a Turk.

Monte Cassino
The Benedictine Abbey was bombed and totally destroyed during the Second World War, but has since been rebuilt to its original style and is the mother house of the Benedictine Order. The monks grow all their own produce and are very keen bee keepers so this is a chance also to buy their special honey with a eucalyptus flavour. There will also be a short stop made at the British War Cemetery where there are 4,200 graves. These are beautifully kept and for many people this is the highlight of the trip.
